First blog ever!

In 3 weeks I will be leaving for a very loosely planned backpacking trip through South America! This has been something I have dreamed about doing since my early 20s and it is finally happening! I am somewhere between over the moon ecstatic and completely terrified when I think about taking on this vast continent where I barely speak the language, but at the same time I am fully ready to immerse myself in Latin culture. Ready to explore vibrant cities, hike mountainous views, meet some locals and drink it all in! This blog is intended to document my travels and memories through South America for my friends and family.

Rio for New Years Eve is a really big deal. It bring in over 2 million Brazilians and tourist to Copacabana Beach to celebrate the new year. It is one big party with drummers and everyone on the beach is dressed in white to symbolize peace. People also throw flowers into the ocean as an offering to lemanja, the Brazilian goddess of the sea, in order to wish for prosperity in the new year. At midnight the sky is lit up with the most speactular fireworks show, spanning the entire 2 miles along the beach.  We spent 5 amazing days in Rio! We did a whole day of sightseeing. The most famous thing to do is to see Christ the Redentor. This iconic statue can be see from almost anywhere in the big city of Rio. It was completed in 1931 and stands 98 feet tall. Symbolizing Christianity across the world, it has become a new 7th wonder of the world.  We also visited Maracanã soccer stadium, where two World Cups and the 2016 summer Olympics was hosted. Iguazú Falls

Iguazú or Foz do Iguaçu consists of 275 waterfalls, spanning 2 miles between the borders of  Brazil and Argentina! One of the 7 natural wonders of the world! We arrived at 8am after a 14 hour overnight bus from Florianopolis. Our bus arrived on the Brazil side, although our hostel was on the Argentina side. After our overnight bus dropped us off at the terminal, we hopped on a different bus to go to the next station, where we needed to catch yet another bus to cross the border. After two bus rides, we decided that uber would probably be quicker and ordered one to take us across the border to our hostel.  After a 15 minute drive we arrived at Bambu hostel. Only this was not the one we had booked. There happened to be one with the same name on the Brazilian side, and unfortunately, that was where we ended up. We made it to Brazil!!

We made it to Rio! It was a really long journey, over 30 hours. Which included a delayed flight and one full body pat down at the airport because TSA detected an explosive chemical in my stuff. All clear tho! From the airport, we took an Uber to our hostel in the Leme area. Little did we know our hostel was in a Favela. A favela is basically a ghetto, low income area in Brazil. Super, super poor area. Once we got dropped off up a steep hilly road, we had to climb a ton of narrow, steep steps throug a small alleyway to reach our accommodations. Green Culture hostel in the Leme area is in a GrEaT location! If you don’t mind being in a favela with running water being hit or miss and when there is running water expect a cold shower! Which is actually pretty nice after a long hot day. Oh and seeing guys with guns in the streets. We were told they are just interested in drugs and not us.
