Paraty, Brazil

Loved checking out this cute little colonial town. Harry, our walking tour guide shared some pretty neat information about the town with us. Lots of rich history and really cool architecture can be found here, along with some really pretty tropical scenery.

All the streets are lined with cobblestone, but very uneven and hard to walk on. The walls are white stone washed with bright colors that were registered. The architecture has a lot of Masonic influences, with some homes having secret markings. One thing I found interesting was that pineapples on the houses represented how wealthy you were and trumpets were placed on the houses to cleanse bad spirits. The house below belonged to a wealthier family as there are many pineapples.

Another interesting thing was that the tiles of the house were made from the thighs of female slaves. So many people picked their slaves based on thigh size, and they were used to mold the tiles for the roofs. Thus, all the tiles on the roofs are a little unsymmetrical.

We had our first visitor to South America! Jenny came to join us for 19 days! She started in Rio by herself and met us in Paraty and will be traveling through the rest of Brazil with us and on to Buenos Aires, Argentina! One thing that we both love are the coconut waters down here!

One of our three days here was spent on a scooner, or also known as a saveiro. These boats can be found all around the harbor, uniquely colored and decorated. Loved all the beautiful boats around Partay!

We had a blast on our boat trip. Shade, sun, cheap caphrinas and good company makes for a great day! Also taught some Argentineans the YMCA and Macarena!

The next we took the 40 min bus ride to the cute surfer village of Trinidade. Unfortunately, we  weren’t feeling up to doing much that day so laying under the shade on the beach for 6 hours was pretty much our day! Pictured below is us, the village of Trinidade, the beach and the tree we parked ourselves under for the whole day!

One of our most favorite spots was Manue! This place was golden! We ate here almost everyday! Mostly because it was amazing, geographically conveinent to our hostel and also something we could afford because Food in Paraty was a little pricey. We had Açaí, milkshakes, smoothies, juices, sandwiches, brownie & ice cream, fruit salads and coffee.

Until next time K & K & J
